Understanding, Benefits and Kinds of Computer Networks

Understanding Computer Networks

The word "computer network" may be familiar to our ears, considering that almost every day we involve computer networks in our work. Computer network is a system consisting of two or more computers that are connected to each other through transmission media or communication media so that they can share data, applications and share computer hardware.

The term computer network itself can also be interpreted as a collection of a number of communication terminals consisting of two or more computers that are interconnected. The purpose of building a computer network is so that information / data carried by the sender (transmitter) can arrive at the receiver (receiver) correctly and accurately.

Computer networks allow users to communicate easily with each other. In addition, the role of computer networks is very necessary to integrate data between client computers so that a relevant data is obtained.
Benefits of Computer Networks

We have discussed the definition of computer networks, then we will talk about the benefits of computer networks themselves. There are many benefits of computer networks, including:

With computer networks, we can access files that we have as well as other people's files that have been disseminated through a network, such as the internet network.
Through a computer network, we can make the process of sending data quickly and efficiently.
Computer networks help someone to get in touch with other people from various countries easily.
In addition, users can also send text, images, audio, or video in real time with the help of computer networks.
We can access news or information very easily through the internet because the internet is one example of computer networks.
For example, in an office requires a printer, we do not need to buy a number of printers with a computer contained in the office. We only need to buy one printer to be used by all employees of the office with the help of computer networks.

Kinds of Computer Networks

Generally computer networks are grouped into 5 categories, namely based on geographical range, distribution of information sources / data, data transmission media, roles and relationships of each computer in processing data, and based on the type of topology used. Here's the full description:
A. Based on Geographical Reach
understanding of computer networks

Simple LAN network scheme
1. LAN

Local Area Network or often abbreviated as LAN is a network that only covers a small area, such as an internet cafe, office, or school. Generally LAN networks are not far from 1 sq. Km. Usually LAN networks use IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technology which has data transfer speeds of around 10, 100, even 1000 MB / s. Besides using Ethernet technology, not a few also use wireless technology such as Wi-fi for LAN networks.
2. MAN

Metropolitan Area Network or MAN is a network that covers a city with high data transfer speeds. You could say, MAN network is a combination of several LAN networks. Jangakauan of MAN networks ranges from 10-50 km. MAN only has one or two cables and is not equipped with switching elements that make the design simpler.
3. WAN

Wide Area Network or WAN is a network that covers a wide geographical area, such as a country and even continents. WAN is generally used to connect two or more local networks so that users can communicate with other users even though they are in different locations.
B. Based on Distribution of Information / Data Sources
understanding of computer networks is

Centralized and distributed networks
1. Centralized Network

What is meant by centralized network is a network consisting of client computers and computer servers where the client computer serves as an intermediary in accessing information sources / data originating from server computers. In a centralized network, there is the term dumb terminal (mute terminal), where this terminal does not have a data processing tool.
2. Distributed Networks

This network is the result of a combination of several centralized networks so that it allows several computer servers and clients that are interconnected to form a certain network system.
C. Based on Data Transmission Media Used
UTP cable, one of the media used on wired networks

UTP cable, one of the media used on the wired network
1. Wired Network

Data transmission media used in this network is cable. The cable is used to connect one computer to another to be able to exchange information / data or connect to the internet.

2. Wireless Network (Wireless Network)

In this network electromagnetic waves are needed as data transmission media. In contrast to wired networks, this network does not use cables to exchange information / data with other computers but uses electromagnetic waves to send information signals / data between one computer and another computer. Wireless adapter, one of the transmission media used in wireless networks.

D. Based on the Role and Relationship of Each Computer in Processing Data
understanding of computer networks is

Client-server model
1. Client-Server network

This network consists of one or more server computers and client computers. Usually consists of one server computer and several client computers. The server computer is in charge of providing data resources, while the client computer can only use these data resources.
2. Peer to Peer Network

In this network, each computer, both the server computer and client computer has the same position. So, a server computer can be a client computer, and vice versa the client computer can also be a server computer.
E. Based on Network Topology Used
One type of topology (bus topology)

One type of topology (bus topology)

Computer network topology is a form / network structure that connects computers to one another. For a more detailed discussion of network topologies, please read the articles on various computer network topologies that I have written before.

So for articles on understanding computer networks along with the benefits and kinds of computer networks. Hopefully my short article is useful and easy to understand.
